RD Position Description

Position Summary

Residence Directors (RDs) work with the Residential Services team to foster an inclusive residential environment that fulfills the mission, goals, and vision of the Division of Student Affairs. RDs are 12-month full-time, master’s level live-in staff members who are responsible for the overall management of a residential area. The RD reports to a Senior Assistant Director in Residential Life. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty in a competitive academic environment.

 

A Residence Director should be well-organized and able to work in a fast-paced, complex organization with daily priority changes. A successful RD should possess excellent interpersonal communication, organization, administration, and supervision skills as well as a commitment to educate students, engage the community, and enrich the Northwestern experience.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an inclusive community in a select area of campus consisting of multiple halls, housing from 400 to 750 students

 

  • Coordinates overall administrative management of a residential area including but not limited to; occupancy, facilities, keys, conduct, opening/closing, and finances

 

  • Directly supervise and facilitate the recruitment, training, development, and evaluation of 11 to 18 student staff

 

  • Serve as a conduct administrator and adjudicate violations of Residence Hall and University policies and procedures

             

  • Develop academically supportive communities alongside Residential Academic Initiatives with significant faculty engagement

 

  • Develop meaningful relationships with students by providing opportunities for growth and development

 

  • Serve on at least two departmental committees, including but not limited to:  Assessment, Professional Staff Selection, Professional Staff Training, Recognition, Student Leadership, and Student Staff Selection and Training

 

  • Recruit, train, and advise programming board(s) and Area Council

 

  • Participate in duty rotation, serving 2,000 to 4,000 residential students, and perform on-duty responsibilities 24/7/365

 

  • Utilize technology including but not limited to; Maxient, When to Work, Microsoft Outlook, SchoolDude, SharePoint, RMS Mercury, and KeyTrak®

 

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Additional opportunities include chairing departmental committees, managing an efficient neighborhood desk, supervising a graduate assistant, advising the Residence Hall Association or National Residence Hall Honorary, and/or working with Residential Colleges or Communities

The Residence Director for Graduate Housing (RD) works with the Residential Services team to create an inclusive residential environment that fulfills the mission, goals, and vision of the Division of Student Affairs. The RD for Graduate Housing is a 12-month full-time, master’s level live-in staff member who is responsible for the overall management of the three graduate housing areas. The RD reports to a Senior Assistant Director in Residential Life. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty in a competitive academic environment.

 

The Residence Director for Graduate Housing should be well-organized and able to work in a fast-paced, complex organization with daily priority changes. A successful RD should possess excellent interpersonal communication, organization, administration, and supervision skills as well as a commitment to educate students, engage the community, and enrich the Northwestern experience.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an inclusive community in graduate housing, serving approximately 700 residents; including master’s, PhD. And Post-Doc students and their family members

 

  • Coordinates overall administrative management in the graduate housing area including but not limited to: occupancy, facilities, keys, conduct, move-in and move-out, mail room functions, and finances

 

  • Directly supervise and facilitate the recruitment, training, development, and evaluation of 9 Graduate Housing Assistants

 

  • Oversee the graduate housing desk, a 24 hour operation staffed by 1 full time program assistant, 2 part time staff, and several student clerks

 

  • Serve as a conduct administrator and adjudicate violations of Residence Hall and University policies and procedures

 

  • Develop meaningful relationships with students by providing opportunities for growth and development

 

  • Serve on at least two departmental committees, including but not limited to:  Assessment, Professional Staff Selection, Professional Staff Training, Recognition, Leadership, and Student Staff Selection and Training

 

  • Assist with undergraduate housing processes, including but not limited to: staff training and selection, move-in and move-out, and all-staff meetings

 

  • Serve as departmental liaison with the Kellogg School of Management

 

  • Participate in duty rotation, serving 2,000 to 4,000 graduate and undergraduate residential students, and perform on-duty responsibilities 24/7/365

 

  • Utilize technology including but not limited to; Maxient, When to Work, Microsoft Outlook, SchoolDude, SharePoint, RMS Mercury, Pitney Bowes, and KeyTrak®

 

  • Other duties as assigned

Position Summary

Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs) work with the Residential Services team to foster an inclusive residential environment that fulfills the mission, goals, and vision of the Division of Student Affairs. ARDs are 10-month, 20 hour a week, master’s seeking students who live-in and collaborate with the Residence Director to provide overall management of a residential area. The ARD reports to a Residence Director and indirectly to a Senior Assistant Director in Residential Life. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty in a competitive academic environment.

 

An Assistant Residence Director should be well-organized and able to work in a fast-paced, complex organization with daily priority changes. A successful ARD should possess excellent interpersonal communication, organization, administration, and supervision skills as well as a commitment to educate students, engage the community, and enrich the Northwestern experience.

  • Duties and assignments are subject to change at the discretion of the department Director, Senior Assistant Director, or Residence Director; the amount of time devoted to each area may vary from time to time

  • Additional opportunities may include co-managing an efficient neighborhood desk, co-advising the Residence Hall Association or National Residence Hall Honorary, and serving as a conduct hearing officer

 

Compensation

The ARD will receive a $1000.00 monthly stipend (10 months) plus housing accommodations and a meal plan to use when the campus dining halls are open. Please note, the candidate selected for this position will not receive any additional benefits, other than the stipend, apartment and meal plan stated above. The ARD can purchase a faculty/staff parking pass through parking services, but is not covered by the department. We are not able to offer a tuition waiver, health insurance, or other benefits.

 

Minimum Qualifications

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications: Undergraduate experience living on campus. Enrolled in a graduate program at Northwestern University or other local institution for the entire 2016-17 academic year.

 

The ARD position requires the ability to review written documents, manuals, and online materials; operate office equipment including computers, cell phones, printer equipment as well as being able to assist others in doing so; and lift and carry at least 10 pounds. The ARD position requires the ability to monitor social and educational activities, recognize fire alarms, and recognize facial features for security purposes. The ARD must be able to ascend stairways and have the ability to identify potential safety hazards and to be able to monitor adherence to rules and policies. The ARD must have sufficient abilities to provide clear instructions and directions in emergency situations where rapid and clear communication is essential.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with front desk operations and/or community development. Experience working with high-achieving and diverse students in a fast-paced environment. Experience with the implementation and assessment of student learning outcomes. Experience as a Resident Assistant (RA) or similar position as undergrad.

 

Enrolled in the Master of Science in Higher Education Administration and Policy program at Northwestern or comparable program at another local institution.

Position Summary
The Assistant Director is part of the central management team that provides leadership in developing a residential environment that fulfills the goals of Residential Services and the Division of Student Affairs. The AD is a full-time master's level staff member who lives off-campus. The AD reports to the Director of Residential Life. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty in a highly selective and competitive academic environment.

 

Supervise four full-time Residence Directors; implement the community development model in assigned residential communities; coordinate departmental processes at the discretion of the director; administratively resolve mid-level student conduct cases; contribute to resident and staff educational efforts; chair, advise, and serve on departmental committees; assist with crisis intervention; and participate in professional development activities.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision

  • Directly supervise four Residence Directors (RDs)

    • Meet bi-weekly with RDs to provide on-going feedback and conduct annual performance evaluations

    • Monitor RD administrative resolution of student conduct cases to ensure consistency and timeliness

    • Work with RDs to initiate, plan, support, track, and evaluate community development activities

    • Work with RDs to develop and assess appropriate community development programming

    • Work with RDs to ensure supportive advising of Programming Boards and Area Councils

  • Indirectly supervise approximately 60 Resident Assistants (RAs) and may indirectly supervise 1-3 Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs) and 9 Graduate Housing Assistants (GHAs)

  • Assist in the selection and training of all RDs, ARDs, and RAs

  • Conduct special planning, evaluation, and data gathering for continued improvement of the residence halls

 

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in departmental meetings

  • Participate in bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisor

  • Address student and parent issues and resolve them in a satisfactory manner; communicate all information to direct supervisor and others as appropriate

  • Chair, advise, and/or serve on departmental committees

  • At the discretion of the director, may lead centralized departmental functions (i.e., leadership and advising initiatives, professional staff training, operations, recognition, etc.)

  • Assist in the development and functionality of residence hall programming boards and area councils

  • Initiate and maintain collaborative programs with faculty and Division of Student Affairs staff

  • Collaborate with the Director of Residential Academic Initiatives and the Faculty Chairs relating to the effective functioning of all Residential Colleges and Residential Communities

  • Provide quarterly and year-end reports on the major activities of the residential area

  • Represent the department at University-wide events such as Wildcat Welcome, Family Weekend, Wildcat Days, Senior Week, and Commencement

  • Represent Residential Services on various University, divisional, or departmental committees

 

Student Conduct

  • Train and coach RD staff on appropriate administrative resolution procedures

  • Maintain consistency by monitoring the administrative resolutions of RDs

  • Provide administrative resolution for residential students with repeated or serious violations of University policy (may include co-hearing cases with the Office of Student Conduct)

  • Maintain accurate records by following procedures related to judicial database

  • Participate in training programs provided by Northwestern's Student Conduct Office

 

Crisis Intervention

  • Serve in a duty rotation to provide 24-7 emergency assistance to staff living on campus and carry a cell phone at all times (unless on vacation)

  • Respond, in coordination with other professional Residential Services staff members, to critical incidents occurring on campus

  • Ensure appropriate follow up on student wellness and crisis concerns by RDs and ARDs

 

Professional Development

  • Participate in department and division-wide professional development activities

  • Attend regional or national workshops/conferences for continued development and training

  • Stay current in professional development by reviewing articles, journals, books and/or websites

  • Develop connections with staff in various University offices including but not limited to Northwestern Dining, Counseling and Psychological Services, Dean of Students, University Police, Health Promotion and Wellness, Student Conduct, and Campus Inclusion and Community

  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education administration and

  • Two to three years of experience supervising full time staff and

  • Two to three years of experience in residential life with increasing responsibility including extensive experience in staff selection and training, staff supervision, community and leadership development, advising, student development, professional staff selection and development, and social justice.
